Saturday Fun

When I was growing up, Friday night meant "stay-up-late night." We could stay up as late as we wanted and often slept in the living room in sleeping bags or on the couch. Brishen has been staying up later on Fridays for a while now, and Basia recently asked why she never gets to stay up late. I decided to pass on the "stay-up-late night" tradition to the next generation. They stayed up quite late last night and slept on the air mattress in the living room. That led to this sweet sight early this morning.

Our hiking group went to Pena Blanca this morning. As on every hike, I was amazed at the different geological formations--no two hikes have been the same. The kids could have explored the caves for days. There have been archaeological digs in the area that found evidence of ancient people. They found signs in this area of the oldest cultivated corn in the United States.

At one point along the hike, Basia spotted a ringed tail hanging down from high above us. We watched it for a while and finally saw its face. None of us had ever seen or heard of this sort of desert animal. I've since looked it up and it is a ringtail cat, although it isn't part of the cat family. I would love to see how it climbed the rocks to get to that perch.

Now at one point, the amazing rock formations were the most interesting part of the trip. Later, the mysterious ring-tailed animal was the most interesting sight. However, Jon just loves the spotlight, so he had to get the attention back on himself. After telling the kids countless times to watch their heads among the rocks, he forgot his own advice for one small moment. That moment led to a small gash on the top of his skull, lots of running blood, one very sad 4-year-old daughter, and this not-so-pretty tape-up job.

After some scrambling to find medical supplies and time to get Basia settled back down (when she saw the blood, she burst into tears and took off back to the caves and away from the sight), we hiked back to the vehicles. Basia wanted to walk with her brother, and they held hands and chatted the rest of the way.

Brishen's Birthday, Too

We were in Sacramento on Brishen's birthday, but we made it home to celebrate the next day.  He wanted green chile potato corn chowder...
