Backyard Camping (Before)

Now that we are weekend hikers, we have been tempted to start some family camping. When we are out in nature, we often see spots where we would like to stay a little longer. I am a girl who much prefers a soft bed and (especially) a real bathroom with a sink, but I am even longing to enjoy nature for a longer period of time. Jon has promised to do all the campfire cooking.

Before we invest any money on a real tent or other camping gear, we decided to see how the kids would do overnight in a tent in our own backyard. Basia got this little tent for her birthday a couple years ago. They set it up this afternoon and are out in it right now. I will put the pre-darkness interviews after the pictures. I will update with some morning (or 12 minutes after dark, if they don't make it until morning) interviews later.

Q: What makes you most excited about staying in the tent tonight?
Basia: I like to build it with Dad and Brother and use a flashlight and telescope.
Brishen: I want to go out and look at the stars.
Jon: (talking way too fast and having to be cut off early so I wouldn't have to transcribe multiple paragraphs) Well, it's only slightly less comfortable than the bunk in Juarez (where he was until this morning), but mostly it will be cool hanging out with the kids because this is a trial run for future camping outside the backyard.
Q: Do you have any worries?
Basia: No, there will be Brishen and Daddy.
Brishen: Basia or Dad might roll over on me.
Jon: Nope. Actually, my worry is that we won't last the night.
Q: Will you last the whole night?
Basia: Yes.
Brishen: I hope.
Jon: Oh, yeah! Well, if the kids go inside, I'm going in.
---
Did I mention that it is a small tent, so I have graciously volunteered to stay in my own cozy bed tonight while they conduct this experiment? My prediction? I am guessing that Basia will be inside as soon as she gets really tired. I think Brishen and Jon will make it. Brishen had allergy/breathing problems the last time they tried to sleep outside, so hopefully that doesn't come up again. Otherwise, I think he is ready to become an avid camper. I know Jon is! What shall I do all by myself in this quiet house? Hmm, a girly movie?

Let me know where they put their outside toilet so when I visit I don't accidentally walk there. I hope everyone has fun, but I am sure Melani will!

Brishen's Birthday, Too

We were in Sacramento on Brishen's birthday, but we made it home to celebrate the next day.  He wanted green chile potato corn chowder...
