Basketball Game and Pumpkin Potluck

Sunday was another busy day. Brishen's bell choir performed for all three services. He then had children's choir in the early afternoon. We picked him up from there and ran straight to his basketball game. Brishen played better than he has this season. He shot the ball over and over again. He got rebounds. He caused several jump balls. Now, I don't know if it is a coincidence, but I FORBADE him from doing math during his basketball game. That may seem strange to you, and I admit that he's a strange kid (in a good way, of course). I helped coach his last basketball game and noticed that his head didn't seem to be in the actual game a lot of the time. I know him pretty well, so I figured out that he keeps watching the score and calculating how many points difference the two teams are, and who knows what else he calculates. I just know there was a lot of math going on in his head during the game. After Sunday's game, he told me that he didn't look at the scoreboard a single time the whole game. I guess he can't even trust himself to look at numbers without doing a bit of math. Others have to force their kids to DO their math, and I have to force my kid to STOP DOING his.

After the basketball game, the family came over for a pumpkin potluck. Everyone brought something with pumpkin in the recipe. We had pumpkin soup, pumpkin salad (with pine nuts, pecorino, and balsamic), pumpkin bread and vanilla butter, pumpkin cheesecakes, pumpkin delight, pumpkin milkshakes, pumpkin parfaits, and pumpkin pie cheesecake bars. We were all a bit sick afterwards from all the sweets, but it sure was yummy!

Brishen's Birthday, Too

We were in Sacramento on Brishen's birthday, but we made it home to celebrate the next day.  He wanted green chile potato corn chowder...
