Reading Challenge, Week 21

Brishen:

33. The Thief in the Beanstalk by P.W. Catanese

Can I just say something about Brishen's reading? The books for this challenge that I list each week are just a touch of what he reads. I only count books that he reads for pleasure during non-school hours on this list. He reads a lot of books for school that don't get counted. If you want to see a complete list of all he has read this year, go on over to our homeschool blog. I keep track of his history and literature books along the side. I guess I need to add in science and art books, too, but at least you get the picture that he has read a lot more books than what shows on here. I am now trying to read all the books that I assign for him to read. I cannot believe how much of my time it takes me, and yet I expect the same of him! I'm getting quite the wake-up call.

Melani:

35. Little Lord Fauntleroy by Francis Hodgson Burnett
I preread this one to assign to Brishen, but I decided that it can wait until he studies modern literature again in 8th grade, since we are quickly running out of time. Supposedly this book was the Harry Potter of its time and little boys were made to suffer in fancy, velvet and lace after their mothers read of the sweet little lord. This book is by the same author as The Secret Garden (which I still have never read) and The Little Princess, which I read to Brishen a few years ago. I learned some very interesting things about her from the introduction to the book.

36. Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert
I can finally cross this classic off my list of books that I have never read. Are we supposed to identify or like the main character? I did not. I kept hoping that she would come to her senses and realize that the faithful, hardworking man that loved her so much was worth more than all the passion she felt she was lacking in life. It was definitely a tragedy to the very end.

Jon:
He's been gone, and I doubt he has had a moment to read anything. If he has, he's not around to tell me about it, so he's not getting credit for it this week.

Brishen's Birthday, Too

We were in Sacramento on Brishen's birthday, but we made it home to celebrate the next day.  He wanted green chile potato corn chowder...
