Basia went to a homeschool program at a local gym on Tuesday. She will be going every Tuesday for three hours. It is very exciting, in that she gets to be away from Mom and pack a lunch to eat with her friends. She gets to spend time doing guided exercises, swimming, eating lunch, and then enjoying open gym in a great gymnastics facility.
Her first day was Tuesday. I wasn't sure how she would do during the swimming time. I know that she is so very close to really swimming, so I figure that there would be a good chance that this class would eventually push her over the edge. I didn't send floaties or mention to anyone that she needs extra help. They are highly certified in the area of swimming instruction, and, even though the kids don't really get lessons, I knew they expected the kids to be at all different levels of swimming and would keeep a special eye out on that first day.
When she got home, she went on and on and on and on about all she did. She told me all about swimming. I questioned her extensively. She was so excited that they had flippers for the kids to use. I questioned some more. She explained that it was really deep and that she couldn't touch the bottom. She also explained that she jumped in and also used the slide. I was a little confused, so I kept asking questions.
I know that she was ready to jump in and swim back to the side without help, even though she has not ever done it. I asked her if she wore a life jacket of floaties. She told me that she didn't need to because they had flippers to wear. I asked her if someone caught her. She told me that she didn't need anyone to catch her because she had flippers to wear. I asked her if she swam straight to the side. She told me that she didn't need to because she was wearing flippers.
She demonstrated how she only had to move the flippers when she started to sink, and they would keep her afloat. She has absolutely no clue that she had anything to do with it or that she reached a milestone. All she knows is that those flippers sure were amazing. It will be interesting to see how long it takes her to realize that she can do the very same thing without the flippers.
