She's Six!

That's right. My little girl turned six when I did not have internet access. You were spared the sappy "six years ago today" blog, but I'm sure you got it last year and will also get it next year. Wow, six! OK, I better stop or else you'll get the sappiness after all.
Basia and Grandmother made her skateboard cake.

We talked her (easily) into going to Western Playland to celebrate her birthday this year instead of having a big party with friends. I cannot believe how much easier it was on me (no invite list, no invitations, no party favors, no games, no crafts, no decorations). I also cannot believe how much I missed that silly stuff (the invite list, the invitations, the party favors, the games, the crafts, the decorations). I think there are lots of great ways for a kid to celebrate a birthday, and I don't think it always has to be a big party with a theme. I'm just going to keep repeating that to myself for the next year.

Both kids (and Jon, I, Kenn, and Diana) enjoyed the bumper cars.

Jon, Brishen, Kenn, and Diana are actually on that raft, about to get soaked. After we rode it several more times, we learned that heavy adults in the back and lots of light kids in the front makes the biggest splash. Basia would not ride this, but she loved to stand in the soak zone and ended up getting wetter than any of the rest of us.

To me, this ride is like a relaxing swing, especially if you are sitting in the middle and not way in the back. I just do not get how it could be scary. I assured Brishen that he would enjoy it and that he wouldn't get scared at all. I was wrong. I'm thinking he has his dad's (and both grandma/mother's) fear of heights. It really is fascinating what scares one or another of us. It is also fascinating to realize that I have now joined the ranks of the women who prefer to sit out all the crazy, spinning rides. They cause too much sickness for the tiny amount of fun. I pride myself on being able to handle it all, but I am officially an old lady when it comes to spinning. I'll be waiting on the bench nearby. With Diana. And Basia.

This was the last ride of the day. It was the ride after the warning that there would be no more rides that day. Basia had refused to ride it all day long until we told her that we were done with rides. She then got up the nerve. She's one smart cookie.

Brishen's Birthday, Too

We were in Sacramento on Brishen's birthday, but we made it home to celebrate the next day.  He wanted green chile potato corn chowder...
