A Weekend of Traditions

We started the weekend by going to the downtown Las Cruces tree lighting ceremony. When the mayor was about to start the countdown to light the tree, Basia asked if they were going to chop the tree down. When the countdown did begin, Basia asked if it was going to explode. She equates countdowns with loud noises, and she wanted to make sure she would be OK. In addition to lighting the big tree, the museums downtown open, luminarias light the mall walk, the railroad museum has displays and activities, and Santa can be found.

Basia sat on Santa's lap with her friend. She let Santa know that she wants a Batman cave for Christmas. Unfortunately Santa said, "Oh, a Batman game." When she left his lap and came over to me, she stomped her foot and almost lost it because she was sure that was her one chance to let Santa know what he wanted, and he got it wrong. She was sure he would mistakenly bring her a Batman game instead of her greatest heart's desire. I let her know that she could clear it up with a letter, and I later let her know that I stopped Santa to make sure he understood that it was a cave she wanted and not a game. She was relieved.

On Saturday night, Basia set out a shoe for each of us in the Dutch tradition. Sinterklaas filled each shoe with candy while we slept.

Sunday night was the annual Noche de Luminarias. We joined friends and family to walk along the luminaria-lit NMSU campus. The four Moores were again wearing our somewhat-silly winter hats, as is tradition. We then waited in a very, very long line to ride a horse drawn buggy to see the same luminaria-lit campus from a different view. Then we went inside to watch a local middle school bell choir and then some NMSU dancers perform. We topped the night off in the parking lot, by my mom's car. She had a thermos full of cocoa for all, in addition to gingerbread and butterscotch bars. Basia wanted the night to last forever!
