I was tucking Basia into bed last night, and I asked her to try very hard to stay in her room all night long--let's just say this move is taking its toll on her in lots of ways and sleep's a big one. She said that she couldn't because of the spiders. I told her that there are no spiders in her room.
She looked at me like I was crazy and responded in her 13-year-old voice, "Mom, we live in the desert. Of course there are spiders." I explained the difference between me placing her bed out in the open desert and us living in a house with actual walls and such to keep the creatures outside and us inside. She believed me and even slept in her room for the entire night.
Now I just have to hope she doesn't spot an inside spider any time soon to disprove my tale. After all, we live in the desert.
