Last weekend we were spectators at our first Tae Kwon Do tournament in Las Cruces. I know that my own children will one day want to participate in tournaments, so I thought it would be a good idea to see what our future holds. Basia cannot wait until she gets to spar in a tournament, and Brishen looks forward to doing forms and breaking wood. We were very amused to find that the "wood" the younger kids break at the tournament was very, very thin and very, very light and very, very easy to break compared to the wood we have broken before.
My own thoughts? I wonder how it happened that I will one day be on the sidelines, watching my own children punch and kick other people's children. Hard. On purpose. For points. It seems so strange to me. On the other hand, I feel very fortunate that we have found a sport that both of my kids really love right now.
