My girl is still four and starting to sound out words and all that jazz! She is a reader! Her school does sight words. I'm not a huge fan of most sight word lists after my years of studying dyslexia, but I'm not one to let my kids get left behind. I printed out some sight words but made sure to show Cassia how to figure out what they said by sounding them out. There's no need to memorize most words on the Dolch list since most of them can easily be decoded. After working with her on a few of the words, I knew we could get out the very first Bob Book. She was ready. She had never seen the little book before, so it was real, actual reading. Those who know Cassia know that she loves to memorize books and "read" them over and over. I cannot wait until she is an independent reader. The joy she will have when she can devour book after book on her own will be a dream for her!
