One year ago today, Brishen and I started keeping track of the books we were reading. Our goal was to read each and every book in our library at some point in the next 20 years. Brishen will be at a disadvantage since he will likely be moving out before he's 36 (or else!). We didn't set any goals for how many books we would read this year, but the day has arrived, and I have read 40 books this year.
Several years ago, back when I was the mom of only two delightful children, I read 80 books in a year. That was one of my favorite years ever. I still remember many of them and loved having read so many great books. I realize 40 is only half as many books as 80 and isn't even a book a week or any very meaningful number, but I'm proud of that number. I read almost entirely nonfiction, but nothing too complicated. Reading is just about the only "me" activity that I have left in my life right now, and any day with a chunk of time to read while the kids nap is a much better day.
As far as the challenge to read all the books in my library, I'm not actually faring all that well. I still go to the library and check out books. I get recommendations all the time about new books that I should read, so I buy them. I'm not sure how many of those 40 books are books that we already owned, but I may have to investigate that and try a little harder next year.
I'm trying to decide if I should set a new goal for next year. I would like to do a better job of reading our classics. Maybe I'll shoot for 41 books in the coming year. That is a baby step of improvement but still an improvement. I want this to remain a joy in my life and not become something unattainable that I give up on. I have four books simultaneously in the works right now, so I'm off to a strong start.
(I can't report on Brishen's progress because he's not currently at home to set me straight on the facts. He read a few more books than I did and definitely did a better job of reading the books in our current library and reading some great classics.)
