Ygdrasil (Yggy) is on the outs with all the other hens. If she goes in the run with the others, she is attacked. She decided on her own to become broody and hang out with the bunnies. Her broodiness is finally over, so now she is aimlessly wandering my garden and enjoying the good life. I can't put her back with the other chickens. Even with clipped wings she can fly out of the bunny runs. She's a free agent, and she likes it that way. She runs up to me for food. She hangs out on the porch in the evening. She murders beautiful tomatoes and other vegetables that were meant for me, but I'm not sure what else to do with her so she is the official watch dog of the garden.
We have lots and lots and lots and lots of worms in our garden. That is so strange to me since it was all asphalt 15 months ago. Replenishment of the earth is certainly happening. We are also particularly adept at breeding and providing for squash bugs. We do wish our garden watch chicken would take care of those instead of the veggies.
Today we cut down or plucked up a lot of sunflowers that were past their prime. We have saved a pile for seeds, though these all seemed to plant themselves. I'm pretty sure that next year's crop will also take care of itself.
Our yard looks so different without the forest of sunflowers. We are hoping that some other plants will now have enough sun to grow a little more before the season is over. We have so many tomatoes on the way. Our tomato plants are getting much bigger than last year.
We are making our own garden stakes from the stalks of some of the sunflowers.
We had no idea what we were growing so we just let it be. It is now so beautiful!! I think it is sorghum from seeds dropped from the wild bird feeders.
Here are the bones from the sunflowers. We fed many to the bunnies, pigs, and chickens, and have another pile to spoil them another day.
