River Bed and Petroglyphs

The kids and I joined our church group (well, one other man today) for another hike. This time we went Northwest of Las Cruces to Valles Canyon. It was a beautiful 5 1/2 mile hike through a cattle ranch and then a dry river bed. It is amazing to me how different each hike has been and how there are so many different types of beauty in this same desert.

The kids are always adding extra work to their hike by scrambling up nearby rocks and finding more difficult ways to get from one place to the next. They push each other because Basia wants to do everything Brishen does, and Brishen isn't about to let his sister do everything he can do. The result is ever higher climbing for both of them.

I don't know if you can see it in this small of a picture, but this is Brishen trying to decipher some petroglyphs.

We stopped for lunch at the entrance to Broad Canyon. There were more petroglyphs at this spot. We felt a million miles from civilization and were all reluctant to turn back. We would have kept going if it weren't for the realization that at some point we'd have to retrace all those mile to get back to the vehicle.

Basia spent much of the hike searching for and collecting seed pods. She luckily decided to leave most of them for the birds. Here she is climbing yet another rock. She wants absolutely no help with her climbing these days.

Brishen's Birthday, Too

We were in Sacramento on Brishen's birthday, but we made it home to celebrate the next day.  He wanted green chile potato corn chowder...
