I woke up to some rain this morning, but it never got so heavy as to start our roof to leak. I used to love rain, but now it causes me stress. It will be nice to love it again someday.
We drove Jon to church, so he wouldn't have to walk through the rain. Then I came home and got myself and the kids prettied up a bit, or in Brishen's case, in unstained clothes and hair professionally brushed by me and in Basia's case, out of her short shorts and tank top and into slacks and a nicer shirt. Then I prepared for the Sunday School class I teach. I know, I know, I should be on the ball and have prepared everything way in advance. That's just not how I work, for some reason. That meant I was cutting out felt letters, punching holes in memory cards, and putting my lesson plans in a better binder.
We headed to church at around 9:30. The kids each went to their own Sunday School class, and I went to worship. The sermon was about hospitality. I definitely need that message pounded into my head now and then. I always think my house isn't clean enough or big enough, my guest room is non-existent, menu planning is too hard, I'm a horrible hostess, etc. I would love to be one of those people who is always ready for company, with the floors scrubbed and the freezer full of last-minute meal options. That's never going to happen, so I better just accept who I am and invite the world in anyway. OK, please don't take my take on Jon's sermon to be akin to what Jon really said. His sermon will be on the church's website for anyone to download in a couple weeks if you want to know what he said that made me want to accept my unvacuumed rugs.
At 11am, Brishen and Basia and I were starting the Sunday School class that I teach. We are studying Judges through Kings over a 32-week period. Today we were learning about Gideon. Basia is really years too young for the class, but she is too old for the nursery and I'm not sure what else to do with her during that time. She gets bits and pieces of what we are studying, but the older kids really are learning a lot. I think that kids are so often taught the same few Bible stories over and over again throughout the years in Sunday School. I started this class using Veritas Press curriculum to delve deeper into stories the children do hear and to introduce some of the stories that children don't usually hear.
After the last worship service and the 2nd hour of Sunday School for Brishen and Basia, a lady from church actually talked Jon into going home for lunch instead of working straight through. That was nice of her. We came home, and I made soup. After we ate, the kids had quiet time in their rooms, and Jon got picked up to go back to church for an afternoon meeting and then Bible Study. While the kids rested, I watched some of a Masterpiece Theater movie and got Basia's long-sleeve shirts out of storage and onto hangers.
I woke Basia up from her nap in time to get Brishen to his basketball game. They lost but had some good moments. My whole local family was there to cheer him on which was really nice. After the game, we needed to kill a little time before picking Jon up at church, so we went to Old Navy. We ran into my brother and sister-in-law there, but they disappeared before Basia could show them the teeny, tiny baby boy clothes she found.
We picked Jon up. Basia played some electric drums, and Brishen played Jon's guitar before we came back home. Sunday supper is "get-your-own" as per Daves family tradition. Brishen had two bowls of cereal. Basia had cold beans (we would have helped her heat them or make something else, but she wanted cold beans). I had beans (heated, thank you very much) with a little enchilada sauce drizzled over them. Jon had some sort of make-shift enchilada-type thing.
Now the kids are watching part of Ratatouille. Jon is trying to finish a book he has to have read before a conference at Sacramento Methodist Assembly tomorrow, and I'm...doing this. The kids will likely be watching TV until bedtime because I am calling to get our satellite service cancelled tomorrow. All the shows and movies we have recorded on our DVR will be gone forever.
I'm thinking that I, too, will watch some shows tonight. I also need to write/print up the daily schedules for this week. Jon will do some packing and hopefully make an ice cream run, but he doesn't know that yet.
There's our Sunday for you.
