Lent

Basia overheard people talking about what they would "give up" for Lent, even though our family does not do that. We were driving a couple days ago, and Basia asked us to help her think of what she could give up for Lent. I suggested a few things, but she did not like any of my ideas.

She finally asked if she could "give up" apples for Lent. I asked her if she really wanted to stop eating apples for that long since she usually eats one or two every single day. She explained that she wanted to give apples to others for Lent. I told her what a wonderful idea that was and that she could give out apples during our next bilingual storytime. We couldn't find a big bag of apples at our grocery store on Tuesday, so Basia grabbed a bag of mandarin oranges and handed them out to kids and adults.

I know that she just does not understand what it means by "giving up" something for Lent, but I think she stumbled on something that meant something to her and to all those who received her gift on Tuesday. Kids are great examples to all of us!
