Book Challenge, Week 11

Here we are, at week 11 of trying to read 52 books in 52 weeks. As you may notice, a couple of us are a bit beyond the 11 books needed to keep up so far. What can I say? When I feel a challenge, I don't know how to just keep up. I'm sure there will be weeks ahead when I will not read anything at all, but if not, chalk it up to my tendency to go overboard when challenged. I'm actually a bit sick of reading, since recovery has left me chair bound so much. Now that I'm feeling better, I'm ready to be active again. Maybe I'll take a week off from reading. Hmm.

Brishen:

He would like me to inform you that he has been reading this week, although he has no completed books to report. He is part of the way through two big books, and it may take him a while to finish either one. He's reading War of the Worlds and Inkspell.

Melani:

21. You Want Fries with That? by Prioleau Alexander
This was a funny book by/about a man who decides to quit his high-powered job and live life working various minimum wage jobs. It gives interesting insight into several different work environments. The ones I remember are pizza delivery guy, ice cream scooper, construction clean-up man, burger joint cashier, cowboy on a cattle drive, and emergency room tech. In the end, he decided the daily grind of his old career was maybe not quite so bad after all.

22. Letter to My Daughter by Maya Angelou
It's by Maya Angelou. Enough said!

23. Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
This was a very interesting book about a man who works on a traveling circus in the 1930s. It has the best ending ever!

You'll have to remind me how it ended. I can't even remember! It was quite interesting, wasn't it? Joe is reading "The Book Thief" now, and we want to rent "Life is Beautiful" because that book got me VERY interested in Nazi Germany. I just can't even imagine living through that!

I'm going to send a couple more books along with Mom from that era that Saralyn had given me. I will soon be studying WWII with Brishen. That will be tough. I'll give you a clue about the ending. Do you remember the old man in the nursing home making his way over to the circus?

Ah yes, that was SO cool! I wish I could remember books more. Once I read them, I totally forget them! That's why Joe needs to hurry up with "The Book Theif." Otherwise, I won't be able to discuss it with him!

We had a great discussion of "The Book Thief" at book club. There was a lady there who lived in Germany during WWII. She was a teenager, so it was beyond awesome to hear her talk about her experiences. We all just sat there mesmerized by her. She said she hated the book at first because of how mean Rosa was (she never heard anyone call someone else those names) but she ended up loving it. She felt that the author must have really talked to his parents about their experiences because so much was so true. She even had to be in a Hitler's youth club, but her teacher mostly just taught them songs, luckily.

Brishen's Birthday, Too

We were in Sacramento on Brishen's birthday, but we made it home to celebrate the next day.  He wanted green chile potato corn chowder...
