I never thought I was THAT clumsy or uncoordinated (be quiet Dad and Joe), but here's a list of the injuries I've suffered from Tae Kwon Do--all of which are still plaguing me to various degrees.
1. hurt knee when holding shield for others to kick while standing in the desert sand (in Oct.)--doesn't hurt very often, but I can still feel it if my hamstrings are tight
2. hyper extended elbow during self defense (in Nov.)--this is one that still really hurts in the mornings and after TKD. I'm trying to wear a brace to get this pain to leave already.
3. pulled forearm muscle--from 3-step sparring. I haven't told my instructor about this one because she already feels bad about all the other injuries I've suffered.
4. hyper extended foot--during sparring. A large chunk of my foot was bruised and swollen, but it is almost better now after two weeks.
5. broken toe/small foot bone--during same sparring incident. Even though the rest of my foot is doing much better, the small toe or joint area right above it is still swollen and really hurts. Since it didn't heal with the rest of the injury, I'm now figuring that I broke something in addition to the hyper extension. This one is annoying because I can't wear most of the shoes in my closet because of the pain.
6. some serious bruises--from 3-step blocking. I should have taken pictures, but luckily they are healing nicely now.
My instructor claims we are the most intense students she's ever had at this early level of TKD. My parents claim I sometimes give 140% when 100% would have been enough. I wonder what my 80-year-old self will say to me. Will she be glad that I stuck with it and challenged myself in new ways? Will she barely be able to walk and move because of all the injuries I sustained when I insisted on sticking with it? I'm just glad that I am the one getting hurt this much. So far, my kids have had a few "ouches" but no real bruises or injuries.
