Stories and Experiences 2: The Thief

We were outside King David's Tomb when a man walked up to our tour guide and talked to him in Arabic. Our guide smiled nicely at him and said a few words and ushered us all away. He told us that we would be surprised if we knew who that was. We all begged to hear, but our guide wanted to make sure we were quite a ways away before he told us. Here's what we learned:

The man who stopped our guide was one of the top 7 thieves in Jerusalem. He was telling our guide that he had had a bad day with no luck getting wallets. He asked our guide if he could have a chance with our group. Our guide politely told him no, smiling all the time. Our guide says he has to live and get along with all these people, so he has to be extra polite to people who really do not deserve it. The thief then asked if our guide would just collect a dollar from each of us to give to him so he could have some lunch. Again our guide smiled and refused and shooed us all away like a protective mother hen.

Traveling with a reputable guide is a good thing!
