Now Open:

"Obsessive Momma Who Reads Way Too Many Books on Struggling Readers, Dyslexia, Teaching Reading, and Such Tutoring Service"  *name subject to change

Prefers to barter with someone who would clean my house or any portion thereof or bake me some bread or make my dinner over cold-hard cash any day.  Has also been known to work for free.

May make your child learn enough phonics to get him or her through med school, but that's only if you let me work with them for quite a while.

May solve a lot of your child's spelling problems at the same time, too.

May worry excessively about what your child's school teacher may be doing that will counteract all my work.  Sorry, for that.  So far I've tutored a very smart 4th grader who knew thousands of sight words and absolutely no phonics to get her through even tiny words she didn't know, a 1st grader who did not know his letter sounds, and a 2nd grader who did not know vowel sounds without saying the phrase "a, apple, aaaa" first (that makes sounding out even the shortest words pretty tough) and not even that much knowledge for the letter e.  It makes me sad that the parents are trusting the schools 100% to teach their children to read, and in too many cases memorizing word shapes is the only type of reading that is being taught.  There are lots of kids who can figure out the rest on their own, but there are lots of kids who never will.  Yes, there are lots of great teachers out there, but even great teachers have been taught that phonics is oh-so 1850s.  They are teaching the best they can based on what they have learned.  It's the kids who are being left behind. Here's a reading test to see if your kid is one who is getting it or one who just is not:  NRRF Reading Competency  The Part 2 will give you an approximate grade level, if that is something you would like.

*See maybe I won't need to change the name of my tutoring service after all.  The "obsessive" part seems to fit.  The "reads way too many books..." also rings a bit true.
