You've been warned! Do not read this posts if you hate the sort of posts where parents simply brag about how great their chidren are. I hate to say it, but I do have great children!
This post is particularly about a particular son of mine. This past school year, he took four live, online classes from a classical academy. This academy is pretty tough stuff, and this was the first time since that one semester in kindergarten when someone besides mom was giving him assignments, grades, and feedback. I think he's pretty smart and hard-working, but this was his first big chance to prove it in the wider world outside this house.
Guess what?
He proved himself to each of his four teachers. He took Latin, Composition, and Omnibus Primary and Secondary, which gives credits in History, Theology and Doctrine, AND Literature. He read some pretty tough ancient writings. He had to churn out some pretty hefty papers. He had to do interviews, write poetry, lead break-out groups, and take 5-hour-long final exams. He had to make sure that he kept up with it all without me to schedule his time or check his progress.
He did all this and earned A's in every class!
He did all this, earning A's, the very same year that we his family swelled from 4 to 8 twice! He did all this the same year his family had to pack up and move to a new house. He did this with little ones pulling at his legs, wanting to be held, wild ones screaming in the next room, and parents expecting a lot of help with the house and with the other kids.
No, my son is not perfect. That teenage moodiness rears its ugly head many a morning, and he sees no need for brushing his hair. But all in all, when I think of my son, I am reminded of my granddad's favorite words, "I am just so proud."
