Our Future Adoption Timeline

We really had no idea what the process would be for us to finalize an adoption through foster care, but today we got an idea of what to expect.  We were told that you have to wait three months following a voluntary surrender or termination of parental rights before you can finalize an adoption.

Mr. Strut's birth mom surrendered her rights to him on February 1st.  Did I share that already?  It was the same day that we said goodbye to Miss Personality, so it was  really good day to get such great news.  The final hearing to terminate his biological father's rights will be in the middle of March.  We were told that we can adopt him in June and that we will have a homestudy done in May for that adoption.  I'm not, yet, sure of what will be involved in this new homestudy or if the CPS side of things works quickly enough to actually get to adopt three months after termination, but our family services worker seemed to think that we would be able to adopt him in June.  Yay!

Miss Independent and Wee One's parents have their final hearing in early May.  If they do, in fact, terminate the parental rights, we would be able to finalize in August. I'm pretty sure we will have to get yet another homestudy in July.

I won't hold my breath that it will all work that quickly or smoothly, but it is nice to have an idea of some possibilities.
