Ornaments 2013

Each year our kids get to open a gift containing an ornament I have selected just for them.  It is the first gift of the season since they get to open it when we put up our tree, usually the day after Thanksgiving.  I try to find an ornament that reminds me of the child.  Here are the ornaments for 2013:

Brishen got an Empire State Building ornament since our big trip to NYC was a special part of his year that we don't want to forget.  He was with me (at the Empire State Building) when I bought it, but he pretended he was pleasantly surprised anyway.

Basia got a crab ornament this year.  It seems strange that they would even make crab ornaments, but they do.  In fact we now have two crab ornaments on our tree.  Our first one documents our time living on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where they absolutely should have crab ornaments.  It's just a little surprising that they would sell them here.  I guess we're not the only strange ones who buy them.  Anyway I got Basia this crab ornament this year because she has fully turned from her vegetarian ways this year.  Seafood is her absolute favorite, and she walks by this ornament regularly and wants to take a bite out of it.  She picked Red Lobster for her birthday lunch and happily eats fish any chance she gets.  Strange we are, but she's happy with her crab ornament.

Thing 2 was a hard one to shop for.  Most of his interests are the same as his brother or the other kids.  There is very little that he loves on his very own.  One thing I have noticed is his love for animals.  He plays with our bin of animals all on his own very regularly.  I knew he'd love this alligator Santa ornament, and I was right.  I could have gotten him an Iron Man ornament, too, but I figured I'd have to get a superhero for each of the boys if I got one, so I went the animal direction for him instead.

Thing 1 is very much obsessed with food, probably from some past neglect and insecurities.  As soon as a meal or snack is done, he is asking about the next meal or snack.  When I tuck him into bed at night, he asks me all about breakfast.  He can be eating and still worrying about the next meal.  Halloween was  a very exciting holiday for Thing 1 because candy is his very favorite type of food.  I knew a candy ornament was the way to go for him.  He really wishes that it were edible!

What can I say?  15+ years of parenting, and I have my first and only princess.  Miss Independent loves princesses even though there is not much exposure for them in our home.  She says princess movies are her favorite even though she doesn't watch them.  This is foreign territory for me, but I am trying to respect this sweet, girly side of her!

Zade is all about the color blue, and he still thinks motorcycles are pretty awesome.  He is loving his motorcycle ornament.  He just wishes that he could play with it.

Wee One loves anything that moves: trains, planes, construction vehicles, monster trucks, etc.  He hates, hates, hates that this ornament has to stay on the tree.  He wants to play with it instead.

Sir Smiles adores balls.  He is pretty delayed in all areas except one.  This child can throw a ball better than Jon (we'll pretend that's saying a lot).  He has a serious arm on him!  If he sees a ball, he basically tunes out every other toy.  Sir Smiles may not be with us much longer, but we will smile each year we unpack this ball ornament and remember our special time with him.

As I suspected it was pretty tough pulling out Miss Personality's ornament from last year.  I still miss her lots and hope she is having a good life.  It has been a long time since I heard anything about her.  Her ornament is up on our tree and will remind me of all the great times we had with her.  It was one year ago that we started transitioning her home, so I am reminded of her a lot right now.  She was the loudest of all the kids when she shouted about seeing Christmas lights.  All the kids have started yelling, "Christmas lights!!!!" each time they see some on a house.  I remember their same shouts last year and how much louder Miss Personality's shouts were.  I don't know which of my children will stay and which will go.  Looking at the ornaments of those who leave will always be a reminder of their time in our family.  I love seeing the ornaments from Brishen and Basia's early years and remembering little parts of their personalities and interests that I was able to capture in an ornament.
