Parson Croft Times August 22, 2020

Sabbath

Saturday Sabbath was recognized at Parson Croft today.  Sabbath feels all the more important now that we are back to our full school schedule.  School lasts more hours now that there are eight students, and no one is in kindergarten.  We work hard all week and then rest hard on Saturday.

I read most of the book, Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio.  I hope to get a bit more reading in before the night ends, and the work week begins again.  Jon played video games on his computer and generally hanging out.  This is the point of sabbath rest after all.  The kids played and played and played, mostly Lego.  Basia spent the bulk of her day in her room.

The lady of the house had an itch to take a leisurely drive, but Jon is finishing his mandated quarantine after his out-of-state travel to visit his mom.  The drive was postponed, but it will happen soon.

Magic, The Gathering

The middle kids talked Brishen into coming over for the afternoon to play some Magic.  They played two games, and I'm told that Brishen won both games.  The playing lasted into the evening so Brishen was tricked into eating dinner with us.  A move across the street makes him feel like he is an intruder during meal times, but I am claiming my Dutch Mother Right to force a hearty meal on him whenever I can.  I don't know if Dutch mothers are known for doing such things, as I've only heard it said of Jewish mothers and Italian mothers, but I'm claiming a Dutch (1/2 Dutch means I'm more Dutch than anything, I guess) mother's right to do the same.

Rhyme Time

We try not to encourage any name calling or disrespect, but we have shown the kids a couple clips from Trevor Noah that have some presidential speaking bloopers.  Oops.  I forget that we can watch them and move on while the kids watch them and laugh about them and bring them up for days.  Then we watched the Democratic National Convention this past week and are excited for the hope of a new president.  I made every child stay up wayyyyy past bedtime to watch Joe Biden speak.  They are pumped for him.  During the speech, Asa started rhyming the current president's name for fun.  He thought he was quite clever for coming up with Donald Dump.  Unfortunately, he was still at it today.  He came into my room, giggling almost too much to share his newest rhyme.  He finally got it out.  Donald "Rump."  I guess we have not done a good job of teaching respect for the position.

Votes are In

Jotham has been voted Most Likely to Walk Into the Kitchen 1,298 Times a Day with Hopes That He May Stumble Into Meal Time.  It was a landslide victory.

New Co-Op

The pandemic is leading to record numbers of new families homeschooling.  This is interesting to those of us who have homeschooled for a long time--my college senior was a kindergartner when we began this journey.  One new homeschooling family is the family of current civil rights activist, Shaun King.  His wife is an educator, and has started a new online co-op.  One of the classes for high schoolers is a civil rights class taught by Shaun King, himself.  That is a dream opportunity, and I am sure there will be other great opportunities for the other children in this co-op.  I am not one for joining co-ops of any sort, but I've already signed the Moore family up for this one.  I feel honored to be a part of anything their family is doing.

Farm News

Asa was out bright and early this morning feeding the grunting pigs.  When I happened to look out the window, instead of seeing Moni eating from one dish and Marie eating from the other, I saw Moni eating from one and a group of chickens eating from the other.  Marie stood patiently waiting for anyone to give her a turn.  I know the animals well enough to know that there is no one out there who is going to willingly hand over a dish of food to another one, no matter how patient that one might be.  I sent Zade to the rescue.  The chickens do, in fact, have their very own food.

Basia was the DJ for our lunch break

Asa's reading is getting more and more fluent.

Asa is in love with the chickens.  He brings cute ones to show me all the time.

My chair lacks comfort for some reason when it gets fuller and fuller at my back.

She was loaned a computer and equipment for a DJ class.

Brishen's Birthday, Too

We were in Sacramento on Brishen's birthday, but we made it home to celebrate the next day.  He wanted green chile potato corn chowder...
