Basia was given a car by Grandma who no longer drives. It arrived today along with Jon who was in Colorado visiting his mom. She is a very pleased teen!
Snaggle tooth above and gap grin below. Asa was pleased that he can still speak correctly. This is the last gap tooth child I will have. I'm going to take lots of pictures and savor this adorable stage.
Miss Lisa left us bagels in our classroom:
Zade worked on drawing Mexico for fun.
Day 2 of school took us less time as we smooth out some parts. Asa did great, just as I expected. After lunch we had a quiet reading time for everyone as I worked one-on-one with Basia. It was really nice, and I hope it stays a good part of our day. I do wish I could join them in the quiet reading, though.
We are working on learning a short poem to start the year. I asked all the kids if anyone thought they already have it memorized on this second day. A couple said they did. When they faltered, Asa chimed in with corrections throughout the poem though he refused to say it or acknowledge that he knew it at all. He also likes to chime in on narrations and correct and add to what others say though he won't give me a narration of his own. I'll have to figure out how to get him to just speak up for himself and not hide behind whispered (sometimes rude) corrections of others.
Edison has a great math brain, but he sure does prefer for me to do the full lesson by his side. I don't know if I am holding him back from independence or simply letting him be the little guy he still is when I sit there with him and encourage him along.
We are learning about Frida Kahlo this term, and we read our first picture book biography of her today and studied our first painting of hers. We were all impressed. Basia noticed the lighting. Cassia noticed the jewelry. Tobias noticed the hat. Several were conflicted about her expression. Her lips seemed to smile a bit while her eyes seemed serious.
Jon is now on a mandatory two week quarantine at home after his out-of-state travel. I'm debating whether I give him laundry duties. I hat to break the rhythm I have since it's the only way I know to keep up. It would be nice to hand over the reigns for the first time in 24 years, though. I wish we had stocked up on wood and supplies for a list of honey-dos! I know he will end up spending most of the time working from home, but he sure does deserve some peace, quiet, and vacation. He just might have a big smile when we head off to our across-the-street classroom each day.
