Holy Land Trip, Day 6, misc.

Looking up near Garden of Gethsemane

A line of tour buses as far as the eye can see! I cannot overemphasize the number of people touring Israel, and it is not their busy season, yet. Giant tour buses were everywhere, and you should see how close they get to each other, trying to navigate in and out of tight spots. The drivers are amazing!

Those black stacks are machine guns stacked into squares while the soldiers are not carrying them. Tons of guns!

This is an arrow slit in a Crusader wall around Jerusalem. It's just cool to me to see an actual slit that defenders would use to shoot arrows on their enemies on the other side of the wall. We read about this stuff in history, but I've certainly never gotten to see it up close before. These slits are all around the wall of Jerusalem.

Twice a week, bar mitzvahs are held in this part of Old City Jerusalem. We got to see several in progress on that Monday. There was a lot of music, a lot of people, and a spirit of celebration.

I'm not sure if you can see it when the picture is this size, but in the distance there is a long, light grey wall. That is the containment wall that Israel has built around Bethany. They are losing their Israeli citizenship, all their rights, and all services the government would provide. Bethany is being left to deteriorate, and the people are left to suffer behind the wall. Our guide told us of a school that had to stop using half of its building because Israel determined one half to be on the West Bank side while the other is in Israel.

This is King David's tomb, inside a little synagogue

To get to King David's tomb, the men and women went to separate sides. The men's side had a library and then the little synagogue area. The women's side was just the tiny worship area.
