I don't know how it is possible, that 14 years have passed since this child entered my life and made me a mom. He was a tough baby, never happy unless he was being held--24 hours a day. Once he became a toddler, he became such a great kid to parent, and I can't even believe how great he is even as a young teen. He helps me, even doing things before I think to ask. He holds babies. He wrestles with toddlers. He shows them all cool ways to play with cars. He tidies rooms.
He really is my pride and joy.
For his birthday celebration, he wanted to go bowling. I always forget how much fun bowling is, and it was still fun with all the little ones in tow. None of us are remotely good bowlers, but the lack of skill and expectation of doing a good job probably makes it even more fun. The little ones all had a blast getting to bowl with a ramp and bumpers. Basia helped them each on their turn. Brishen and the grown-ups tried our hand at non-bumper bowling, so we were lucky to get some 100-point games on the board. My brother may want me to mention that he won and won again, but I won't give him that satisfaction.
Brishen chose a tiramisu cake from a local German bakery, and it was delicious. He got several Lego sets, a pair of Skeletoes, and some fun t-shirts, all making him a very happy birthday boy. He got to eat tons of fried food--including fried pickles--and root beer at the bowling alley, so his birthday was complete.
I long ago promised to take him to New York City when he turns 15, so I added that line item to our monthly budget. One year from now, we he and I will be off to NYC to see the fall colors, the crowds, the park, the buildings, and all the city has to offer!
