Sports Day at UTEP

We got word yesterday that the UTEP football team would be hosting an event this morning for foster families.  The players led the children in a variety of sports activities.  My kids were in heaven, especially Basia.  It will take her weeks to get off her high from sports galore and real interaction with college football players.

I am not recommending that anyone take my children putt-putt golfing.  It was painful to watch!  Zade golfs like a great hockey player, and Edison took so long that 10 kids passed him.

They weren't sure what to do with the rackets at first.  Soren got a hang of it right away and is now begging to go play tennis.  Jon promises them a tennis time very soon.

I have to be careful what pictures I show since it was a foster family event.  Any pictures that show other kids' faces are a no-go, so I can't show the fun one I got of Soren playing tennis.  The kids around him are in awe of his hit with mouths open or fingers pointing, and the football player is ducking to get out of the way of the ball.

This event was geared toward kids over the age of 3, but Asa is our tagalong.  He loves balls, so he thinks the event was made just for him.

Edison's favorite part of the day was riding the Miner bus over to the practice basketball gym.  He was so mad when we got off the bus!  My kids all love basketball, so they really enjoyed getting to play in a gym.

I watched and watched to see how far Asa would travel before coming back to me.  He never did.  He was going, going, gone!

All my kids kept asking when we would get to play football since they knew these guys were football players and we were on a football field.  It was our group's final sport, and our kids loved it.  Basia, Cassia, and Edison played mainly with one of the players.  He would tackle the younger ones by picking them up and gently laying them down and tickling them.  They thought it was awesome.  He and Basia ran after each other a lot.  Basia even got him winded.  He asked her if she runs track.  Very soon!  Zade and Tobias played football together and thought getting to tackle each other was the best.  I normally don't allow any wrestling, but I let them play full contact football.  They both ended up scraped up a bit, but they were so happy with getting to be so rough and tumble.

While the other kids were playing football, Asa found a big friend to play soccer with him.  Asa kicked and kicked and kicked the ball, travelling most of the length of the field a couple times.  He never lost interest in the game and his buddy never lost interest in him.  When Asa felt it was the other guy's turn to kick, he'd just stop and look at him and wait for the ball.

Here's Edison about to be tackled by a college football player.

After the sports, they served lunch to the whole group.  We saw football players eat, and they can EAT!  Oh, my, goodness, I hope my boys don't become football players.  There would be guys walking by with three burgers on buns and two hot dogs.  I see the years when my guys are all teens, and I shudder!

Amazingly, the football player above came up to us as we were about to leave and gave me his phone number.  He told me to call him any time I want help with the kids!  Basia,Cassia, and Edison worked their charm on him!  I can't get over what a nice guy he was to come over to us and offer that at the end of the crazy morning.  Wow!
